The Railroad Hour
The Broadway musical, condensed to half an hour
No other radio programme attempted this. Every week, a complete musical — book, score and all — compressed into twenty-nine minutes with a full orchestra and a leading man who could actually sing it. The repertoire runs from Victor Herbert and Romberg through Gilbert and Sullivan to shows still running on Broadway at the time of broadcast, and the guest list is a roll-call of the American musical stage: Dorothy Kirsten, Jane Powell, Lucille Norman. Because the series was underwritten by the railroads rather than a soap company, it could afford the orchestra. Two hundred and ninety-seven programmes were made; a third of them survive.
