The Northern Electric Show
Mart Kenney and his Western Gentlemen, played live from the stage of the London Arena
Mart Kenney began as a saxophonist in 1928 and ended up the closest thing Canadian dance music had to a national institution. This is a NEMO — a remote pickup, the engineer’s term for anything originating outside the studio — from an arena stage in London, Ontario, fed through a private station and out over the Dominion Network. It is the sound of the sponsored road show, the format that kept Canadian musicians working through the thirties and forties, and one of very few examples of it that anybody thought to keep.
