V-J Day

The night the war ended

This is the most densely recorded night of the entire war, because by 1945 everybody was recording. You can follow it almost minute by minute: the first Forrestal flash on NBC, Robert Trout's fifteen seconds, Truman at the White House, then the networks abandoning any pretence of schedule and going to the streets — Times Square, Chicago, Milwaukee, Hollywood, Independence, Missouri. The next morning brings Attlee and King George VI from London and Hirohito's surrender broadcast from Tokyo, the first time most Japanese had ever heard the Emperor's voice.
