A quiet beginning that turns, halfway through, into something else entirely.

1948–1953 on radio · CBS
A Chicago immigrant comedy that went to television and lasted five months.
Luigi was enormous on radio and a failure on television, cancelled within months, and the reason is instructive: the dialect comedy that audiences accepted when they could not see it became visibly uncomfortable when they could. Italian-American groups had objected from the start. It is the clearest case on this shelf of a property that television did not merely fail to improve but actively exposed.

A quiet beginning that turns, halfway through, into something else entirely.

The one everybody argues about.

Short, complete and unexpectedly devastating.

New tape, a reluctant witness, and a timeline that finally stops making sense.

We go back to the beginning and read everything again.

Three interviews, one archive reel, and a question nobody wanted asked.

Recorded on location, with the room left in.
