New tape, a reluctant witness, and a timeline that finally stops making sense.

1947–1957 · Mutual
The only unsponsored dramatic hour on a national network
Patrick Peyton was an Irish-born priest with a slogan — the family that prays together stays together — and an implausible amount of nerve. He talked Mutual into donating a national half hour and then talked the biggest stars in Hollywood into appearing for scale or nothing at all, week after week, for a decade. What he got was not sermonising: the scripts are ordinary dramatic anthology fare, often very good, with religion carried in the framing rather than the story. It is the largest body of unsponsored network drama in American radio, and the reason it exists at all is one man's refusal to be told no.
528 broadcasts · 12 years held · Hollywood
Over five hundred surviving broadcasts of the Mutual series, plus a synopsis and biographical introduction from the source collection. Recordings held by the Internet Archive.
