One Night Stand was the Armed Forces Radio Service's dance-band series, assembled from live remote broadcasts by the touring orchestras of the 1940s — Harry James, Charlie Spivak, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and others — recorded at ballrooms such as the Hollywood Palladium and pressed onto transcription discs for shortwave relay to troops. As US Government work the discs are in the public domain. Audio streams from the Internet Archive item “AfrsOneNightStand”.

What it became

The band remote

A line run to a ballroom, an announcer setting the room, and a live band carried to everyone who could not be there. One Night Stand and Spotlight Bands made location music broadcasting.
