The American networks banned recordings on air, so news was live or it was nothing. WLS Chicago had sent Morrison and engineer Charlie Nehlsen to cut a routine arrival feature onto acetate discs. The discs kept turning while the airship burned, and NBC waived its own rule to carry the result the next day. Every recorded news report since descends from this one.
